The Johnny Clegg solo shows feature songs from his previous bands Juluka and Savuka, but don`t expect any reunions.
Juluka did reform in 1997 and they did record an album but it was never released.“That was the only one. There are no more plans. We did make an album but it didn’t work. It was very samey,” Clegg tells Undercover News. “So we thought until we can come up with a different hybridization of what we do we would wait a bit and nothing has really happened so I keep on doing what I’m doing”.
The songs from that aborted Juluka project remain unreleased and have been sitting in a vault for the last 12 years. None of the songs have been re-recorded for any of Johnny’s solo albums.
As for Savuka, he says, “We lost our bass player and our dancer, one to HIV and the other to political violence in 1992. Our drummer emigrated to Quebec and the band broke up in 1994. I just carried on doing what I am doing. The audience still hears those songs that I wrote as part of my repertoire in that period”.
