Sony Music Chairman and CEO Denis Handlin has come out in support of Record Store Day Australia.
“Record Store Day is an excellent way to highlight the unique experience of discovering music in your favourite music store and being with fellow music enthusiasts,” he says. “The special environment that music retailers provide for music fans is truly valued by Sony Music and its artists. Congratulations to AMRA and Australian music retailers.”The first annual Record Store Day Australia will be held across the country on April 18.
Music fans all over Australia are invited to visit their local record stores to relive the thrill of discovering music the way we used to do it.
Artists are loving it too. Many were inspired to take a career in music as a direct result of discovering music in a store.
“The first things that I ever saved up for and then bought was music,” says Jason Singh. “I remember my mum and I walking to the local Safeway and while she was at the check out I would sneak away from her and she'd always find me in the record store next door. Sometimes I'd have to pinch a couple of bucks from her purse when she wasn't looking but it was only cause i had to buy the songs i was infatuated by. I remember buying 'sign of the times' by Prince and studying the cover for hours before i even played the disc. It was the first double cd i'd ever seen. there was so much going on in the artwork. Prince in the foreground and a whole weird stage set up behind him complete with a car sticking out from the front. Most awesome! And to top it off, its probably one of my favorite albums of all time”.
Matt Joe Gow is another celebrity record store fan. 'I love buying records, I like having something physical in my hand, I love the smell of records or even CD stores,” he says.à “I love liner notes, havingàsomething that you can look at and read while you listen, kinda putting the puzzle together.àPuttingàa CD or record on there is a certain amount of commitment that is lost when you simply download a single.ààYou gotta listenàto it when its in there and inàdoing that it has time to grow on you, to build that picture.àInàbreaking up an album online, sure it's easy, but I think often some of the artists message is lost.à Similar to a painting where you only see a couple of brush strokes... on a computer screen...'
