For the first time an act from Iran will showcase at SXSW.
The Plastic Wave is a band from Tehran lead by 23-year old singer and bass player Maral.Western rock music is condemned in Iran and under Islamic law singing and performing for women is against the law so The Plastic Wave will not have an opportunity to play live in their own country before they make the US trip.
One of their songs is ‘My Clothes On Other Bodies’. Maral wrote the song about not having the opportunity to wear the fashion she sees from Western society. It can be heard on their MySpace page.
The Plastic Wave is described as an electronic psychedelic rock band. Maral formed the band a year ago with Natch, another musician from Tehran.
The couple met at N!, an underground rock concert held in Iran. 200 people were arrested at the show, the government citing rock music as being satanic and the musicians spent 21 days in jail.
Maral says her musical influence is Iranian singer Sima Bina, a friend of her mother.
The band says that, “what we believe in is to be real and to be true. To experience while we are trying to make our dreams come true and let people know about what we've seen and experienced in this way”.
“While love and peace are the most things we believe in and care about in our lives, but we don't want to use them as a mark and slogan for our music. They are basics of our life, they are what we need to live and what we need to breath. We all know so many people around who talk about peace and love all the time while peace and love are dead in their hearts. So what we have in our mind is the real world, the world we all know, sometimes beautiful and sometimes full of agony. Sometimes full of love and sometimes full of tears”.
“There is no rule for this band except trying and working as hard as we can”.
