Despite repeated denials from her camp, rumours persist that Madonna has in fact adopted a one-year-old boy in Malawi - signalling the beginning of what will likely be a drawn out 'Madoption' saga.
Henderson Geza Dyedyereke, the chief of Lipunga - a village near the Zambian border - has reportedly confirmed the adoption, according to Britain's 'The Sun' newspaper. The newspaper yesterday featured a front-page photograph of the pop icon with a young child strapped to her back. The child's name is said to be David Banda, whose mother died not long after giving birth. Dyedyereke said that he was informed of the adoption by Rev. Thompson Chipeta, the director of the boy's orphanage.
Speaking to the Reuters news agency, he said that the boy's father - Yohane Banda - told him his son is going to America. The father was quoted in 'The Sun' as saying, "I am very happy. As you can see there is poverty in my village."
Madonna's spokeswoman said, "At this time we are unable to give you official confirmation. We may have an official statement within 48 hours."
