Elmer Valentine isn’t exactly a household name, except on the Sunset Strip. Valentine is credited as the man who turned a street into the iconic stretch of West Hollywood. Valentine died this week.
Valentine founded LA’s Whisky a Go Go and the Roxy. He also started a club called The Trip. It is not longer there, but it was the club where The Temptations and Joey Bishop cut their teeth. The Whisky is the most famous of the LA clubs. It was where The Doors were residents in the 60s and Guns n’ Roses made their name in the 80s.
Tonight, the clubs along the strip, the House of Blues, the Key Club, the Viper Room, and the Cat Club will dim their lights for one minute in honor of the man that brought the street to life.
Valentine was 85 years old.
