Dr. Pepper seem to have taken offence to GnR’s insistence that they honour their promotion in which they used Guns ‘n’ Roses name to offer a free can of Dr. Pepper to all Americans.
If you’ve missed the story so far, Dr. Pepper promised a free can of itself to every American if Axl and co got off their arses and released Chinese Democracy in 2008. Axl and co did it, and Dr. Pepper ran a website for 24 hours in which you had to sign up to their mailing list to get a free can. Guns ‘n’ Roses didn’t seem to remember them saying they’ll give a free can to “every American who has access to the internet on November 27 only,” and wrote a sternly worded letter, via their lawyers. In a statement issued recently, Dr. Pepper rebuked by saying “We wish Guns N' Roses the best with their album. This was one of the largest responses we have ever received for a giveaway, and we're happy we were able to satisfy the thirst of so many Dr Pepper fans.
“We simply commented on the delayed release of Chinese Democracy and openly encouraged the band to release it before the end of the year," Dr Pepper said in this week's statement. "Axl even expressed support for our efforts earlier in the year. We are disappointed that GNR's lawyers are turning a fun giveaway into a legal dispute.”
So next time Dr. Pepper want to mock someone with an offer they can’t possibly honour, perhaps they want to think twice? All the feigned humour in the world can’t hide their mass failure.
