Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins and New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben got together on Tuesday for a session of words and music at Borders Books in New York.
The event was a rare insight into the creation of a novel and a song with Harlan readings from his book and Missy playing her music during the instore."I've never done anything like that - I really enjoyed it,” Missy tells Undercover News. “It was interesting to discover how many similarities there are between the way Harlan approaches writing his books and the process of songwriting”.
“Missy sang, I read, and between the songs, we had a discussion on the creative process ? how we come up with ideas, how we develop them, how we feel about them, the insecurity and joy, the differences and similarities,” Harlan said.
Harlan mentioned Missy in his best-selling novel ‘Hold Tight’. On page 297 of the book, it reads, “She sits in the dark and listens and cries. Music does that to her. I didn't get it. Like last month, I heard this song from Missy Higgins. Do you know her”.
The song Harlan is referring to in the book is ‘Where I Stood’.
Missy sang it at the instore. “I confess that I got choked up when she sang ‘Where I Stood,’” he said.

“I'm grateful to everyone who helped set it up and to Paul Cashmere for suggesting it in the first place. Hopefully we can do it again next year sometime," Missy said.
And do it again they should. It has already been suggested that the Harlan Coben/Missy Higgins combination would be perfect for Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah was instrumental in introducing Josh Groban to the world. The story of how a singer/songwriter from Australia ended up in a novel of a New York Times best-selling author would be hard for Oprah to resist.
Oprah is also one of the rare people in the entertainment industry who can recognise talent from both the literature and music world.
