The made for Broadway production of `Unlock`d` received a standing ovation in Chicago last week.
‘Unlock’d’ is based on the 18th century poem ‘The Rape of the Lock’ by Alexander Pope.Sam Carner and Derek Gregor worked on the words and music while Jana Robbins was brought in to produce.
Jana was encouraged by the enthusiastic response from the Chicago audience. “The show continues to get better and better and more primed for Broadway,” she tells Undercover News.
To determine what they need to evolve with the production, the audience was given questionnaires. “The audiences have filled out questionnaires telling us that they love all the characters, and all the music,” she said. “In fact so much, that it is impossible for them to pick favorites”.
‘Unlock’d’ is being groomed for Broadway. Last year, it played to select audiences in New York.
Carner and Gregor began working together in 2002 during the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Their first collaboration was ‘Miracle on Avenue B’, a 20 minute musical. Then came ‘Unlock’d’.
‘Unlock’d’ won the 2004 Richard Rodgers Award.
Derek Gregor’s “other job” is with his band M-Lab. He formed the band with singer Drew Brody and then found Mike White for drumming duties.
