Twenty years after the fact, The Knack have finally decided to sue Run-D.M.C. for sampling 'My Sharona' on the latter's hit tune, 'It's Tricky'.
Also implicated in the copyright infringement lawsuit are producer Rick Rubin, Arista Records, Rush Groove Music, Rush Communications, Yahoo, Amazon and Napster. The Knack's Doug Fieger and Berton Averre claimed they didn't hear 'It's Tricky' - originally released on Run-D.M.C.'s 1986 album 'Raising Hell' - until 2005. It is rumoured the pair had spent the previous two decades in a special facility alongside artists such as Soft Cell, Dexys Midnight Runners, and the chick who sang 'Mickey'.
MTV reports that the suit alleges Run-D.M.C. engaged in "unauthorized copying, reproduction and distribution of [the Knack's] musical composition and improperly [profiting from]" use of the sample. A date has yet to be set for the case to be heard.
