The newest production of the Rocky Horror Show will head to Melbourne in September, after a good stint in Sydney.
The new version is a complete update of the original Richard O'Brien show. Paul Capsis, who plays Riff Raff, O'Brien's character in the movie said he didn't want to repeat what had already been done. "I deliberately steered right away from his portrayal," he tells Undercover News. "I totally reinvent the character, or try too.""Gail Edwards, our director deliberately went away from the film because it is so iconic," he adds. "She wanted something different with our talents and with what we do, utilizing us in a different way."
While Paul is a veteran fan of the shows (he has seen four), Tamsin Carroll (Magenta) admits she has never been to a Rocky Horror Show. "I never have," she shyly admitted. "I have seen the film ... twice".
Paul saw the Reg Livermore version when it came back in the 80s. "The famous Frankenfurter from the 70s returns for like a week and I was 15. I went and saw it and it scared the daylights out of me," he said.
Previews for the Rocky Horror Show start September 14. Opening night is September 18.
Tickets go on-sale on June 2.
