The who's who of hip hop have come under fire over the weekend by lawyers representing the daughter of late jazz musician, Joe Farrell, for using his music in samples without permission.
Kanye West, Common and Method Man with Redman have all sampled the track 'Upon This Rock'.The guilty songs are Kanye's 'Gone' (from 'Late Registration'), Common's 'Chi City' (from 'Be') and Method Man and Redman's 'Run 4 Cover' (from 'Blackout!').
The lawsuit is seeking $1,000,000 in damages, and for all further pressings of the respective albums to be stopped.
If you don't know who Joe Farrell is, but love your funk, you should check him out. The jazz musician is heavily influenced by bebop greats before him, but has explored genres from avant garde to straight out funk with artists like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and the great jazz guitarist 'Joe Beck'.
