The Smoking Gun has exposed how Akon made up his past as the ringleader in a car theft ring and how his claim of spending 4 ?? years in jail were a lie."In the hip-hop world, a performer's street cred can often be gauged by the number of entries on their rap sheet, the time they have spent behind bars, or the gritty details of their illicit escapades", writes the Gun.
Akon has been talking about his criminal past ever since his first record. It was how he made his reputation in the hip-hop world. You see, Akon's reputation needed to be as dangerous as 2PAC, Diddy, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent before anyone would really care.
The Smoking Gun has revealed that Akon has "created a fictionalized backstory that serves as the narrative anchor for his recorded tales of isolation, violence, woe and regret."
The site states that while he has had half a dozen arrests, he has only been convicted of one felony, for gun possession.
There were no prison terms between 1999 and 2002 when the star was at the peak of his hoodliness. He has never faced 75 years prison, as he has widely talked about. In fact, according to The Smoking Gun, Akon has "obliged with canned and well-rehearsed claims and compares his nationwide operation to those depicted in 'Gone in 60 Seconds' and 'New Jersey Drive'.
