Melbourne-based globetrotting rock heroes The Drones ready their third album 'Gala Mill'.
After 'Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By' won the inaugural Australian Music Prize for album of the year in 2005, quintet The Drones have used the acclaim and $25,000 prize money to continue spreading their ghostly colonial swamp rock throughout the world. The band spent much of 2005 and 2006 touring the US and Europe, but now they have returned to Australia with their highly-anticipated third album, titled 'Gala Mill'.The album was recorded in a mill on an isolated 10,000 acre farm in Tasmania, which seems to perfectly complement the coarse, ethereal beauty of their sound. Guitarist frontman Gareth Liddiard said in a press release, "We just wanted to go somewhere interesting, to steer clear of the boring old studio. Studios can feel like hospitals for sick bands."
The sepia-toned sound, and journey through staggering, unhinged rock and chilling hushed ballads may be a hard sell to the wider public, but 'Gala Mill' is set to be another critical triumph. The album will be released on September 2, followed by a quick East Coast tour.
