Aretha Franklin has spat the dummy because Beyonce called Tina Turner "The Queen" at the Grammy Awards. Aretha is laying claim to her royal title 'The Queen of Soul' and doesn't want to give it up for anybody.
"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonc??, however, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy," Franklin said is a statement. "In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyonc?? anyway."Leading into the duet with Beyonce and Tina, Beyonce proclaimed "There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent. Ladies and gentlemen. Stand on your feet and give it up for the queen." when introducing Tina.
Beyonce has not publicly commented on the controversy but her father Matthew Knowles told USA Today, ""I'm not even going to take this to her. Something this ridiculous, it's childish, it's unprofessional. And it's a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess."
Aretha has been known as The Queen of Soul since the 60s. From 1967, she delivered an amazing catalogue of soul classics from 'I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love), to 'R.E.S.P.E.C.T', to 'Chain of Fools' to '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman) to 'Think' to 'I Saw A Little Prayer' to 'Spanish Harlem' in quick succession.
In the 70s, Tina was known as 'The Queen of Rock and Roll', for her hits from 'Proud Mary' to 'River Deep Mountain High' to 'Nutbush City Limits', so technically Beyonce was right.
Aretha's comments seem like sour grapes. Both her and Tina's royal titles are self-appointed.
