2,308,769 phones in the US rang to the tune of T-Pain's 'Buy U A Drank' last year. The R&B hit was the biggest selling ringtone of 2007.
According to Nielsen RingScan, American's purchased 220 million ringtones last year. That was good news for the music industry. It accounted for 15.7% of music items sold during 2007. That added $567 million in revenue to the music industry borttom line.To put the T-Pain ringtone sales into perspective, that figure was better than sales for the 5th biggest selling digital track of the year. It was more than Linkin Park's 'Minutes To Midnight' album sold at No. 7.
91% of ringtone sales last year were Mastertones. Mastertones (or truetones) are the high quality ringtone.
The number one polyphonic ringtone was 'Super Mario Brothers' by Koji Kondo. It sold 153,591 units. Polyphonic tones are the sequenced recordings such as MIDI.
