One of the more interesting releases of 2007 that got away from many of us was the debut album from Gillian Glover, the daughter of Deep Purple bass player Roger Glover.
In April this year, Gillian released 'Red Handed', a blues and roots record which featured a helping hand from her famous dad.At her MySpace site, Gillian explains the start of her career. "In the summer of 2005 I was put in a room with some of the fantastic musicans involved in this project (thanks to my dear friend, Tom Wilcox, who had the idea that then seemed outlandish). We wrote and recorded four songs in those four days. They were incentive enough to do more but it took us a year to get our arses in gear, at which point more musicians came on board. With them, I have been able to record songs written in collaboration with others over the past few years as well as some of my own that I never ever envisaged in their present state. It's all about that inspiration at 3 in the morning, hunched over a guitar. Who knows what will happen?"
Her list of influences is extremely diverse. She cites Dylan, Hendrix and neil Young, but also KT Tunstall to Janis Joplin; The Stones to Crowded House and Ozomatli through to Radiohead and the Chili Peppers. Strangely, Deep Purple failed to make her list.
'Red Handed' is available in the UK. It can be purchased online from amazon.co.uk
