Smashing Pumpkins, well, Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain are back in the studio as promised.
A year after Billy Corgan announced in a full-page Chicago newspaper advert that he'd reform Smashing Pumpkins, he has announced on his eponymous website (which is branded once again with the SP logo) that the band are in the studio with Roy Thomas Baker (who produced The Cars, Queen, and The Darkness' last album).E! Online reports that it's only Corgan and Chamberlain so far, with no reports on any involvement of ex-members James Iha, D'Arcy or Melissa Auf Der Mar. Then again, former Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery announced in May that he would be working with the band, but there is so far no confirmation that he is a bona fide member.
The Pumpkins broke up in 2000, but after ill-fated sojourns with Zwan and 2005 solo album 'TheFutureEmbrace' Corgan was obviously desperate to reform his most profitable and critically-acclaimed project. Shortly after the disappointing launch of his solo album, he bought a full page ad in the Chicago Tribune to announce that Smashing Pumpkins would return.
