Real-life British synth rockers Duran Duran have bought real estate on meta-universe Second Life.
Second Life is an online virtual world where users can make complex avatars and objects and interact with each other. It's almost like a cross between World Of Warcraft and myspace. Recently author Kurt Vonnegut set up a virtual version of himself to give a speech and on August 3 a virtual version of singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega performed a live concert streamed through the site. Now Duran Duran have bought some island real estate in Second Life which they will set up as a luxury utopia, promising "in-world' concerts and media appearances taking place alongside the band's media, public and live engagements in the real world," according to a press release.
The forward-thinking (actual, flesh and bone) band are currently recording their new album. Keyboardist Nick Rhodes said, "Duran Duran are thrilled to be the first band to become citizens of Second Life and are rehearsing now for our first concert there in the coming months." Via their publicist, the band promise to "make history in a few weeks with the first, live, concert by a pop avatar band performed by the group's actual members." Freaky.
