Britney Spears has returned to the musical stage in her underwear.
The mother-of-two gyrated across the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in black, sequinned underwear (kinder reports have used the word 'bikini') and black boots whilst performing her comeback single 'Gimme More'.Her first major appearance since 2004 was met with wilful disdain from a number of ceremony attendees, with nominee Kanye West bleating, "I can't believe she would perform. She hasn't had a hit record in years."
Dave Grohl was slightly more obtuse, but no less equivocal, saying "You know those things that you put batteries in and they just vacuum the floor without anyone touching them? That's what I think of Britney Spears."
Mary J. Blige was more supportive, describing Spears' decision to perform as "smart ... she just went through a lot of things."
Spears is continuing work on the follow-up to her 2003 album 'In The Zone', though it's not yet known when it will be released.
