Australian pop star Darren Hayes, the former vocalist for worldwide chart-toppers Savage Garden, was arrested in London for an alleged racist outburst directed toward a Thai restaurant waiter.
The attack, which did not involve physical violence, is alleged to have occurred at Busaba Eathai in Wardour Street on July 22. Hayes voluntarily attended a Central London police station by appointment, where he was arrested on racial abuse charges and released on bail until 21 September.A statement on Hayes' website, posted by his lawyer, explained that the singer is "deeply upset at the allegation which he strenuously denies."
The statement continued, "Anyone who knows Darren will recognise that the particular nature of the allegation is totally abhorrent to him and contrary to everything for which he has stood."
