New Zealand based mayoral candidate Len Brown is not happy about the upcoming tour of former N.W.A. star Ice Cube to New Zealand.
In a press release yesterday, Brown said "Why is Ice Cube coming to the Telstra Pacific Centre on 22 August this year? We don't want him. We don't need him. He is not welcome here."Ice Cube brings a gangsta (sic) message to our community via his gangsta (sic) rap. This message promotes gangs, gang violence and drugs. We don't want this in our homes. We don't want it on our streets."
Cube, who is known as a pioneer of gangster rap, has had hits like 'Fuck Tha Police' and 'Straight Outta Compton', talking about the hard life on the streets of Los Angeles.
Brown, who is running for Mayor of Manukau, a suburb of Auckland, has raised issues on his website about bored teens, saying "In these challenging times with gangsta (sic) culture and drugs attracting some of our kids "with nothing to do", part of the alternative has got to be a renewed emphasis on sport and recreation."
In New Zealand hip hop has been hugely successful with artists such as Scribe, P-Money and Savage achieving international success in Australia and Europe.
