Like clockwork, the Catholic Church (as well as Muslim and Jewish leaders) are scandalised about Madonna's latest tour.
On the verge of the Italian dates of her Confessions Tour, the wise old woman of pop has stirred up the ire of the Vatican for the part of her performance where she dons a crown of thorns and is raised up on a shiny stylised cross for a 'disco crucifixion'.Reuters scored some grabs from Father Manfredo Leone of Rome's Santa Maria Liberatrice church saying that the show is "disrespectful, in bad taste and provocative," and that, "doing it in the cradle of Christianity comes close to blasphemy."
An equal opportunity offender, Madonna also raised the hackles of Muslim and Jewish leaders. The head of Italy's Muslim League Mario Scialoja told Reuters, "I think her idea is in the worst taste and she'd do better to go home," and Riccardo Pacifici, spokesman and vice president of the Roman Jewish community, said the pop star should have dropped the routine out of respect for the town.
Who'd have thought overt sexual, political and religious imagery might cause controversy?
