Lou Reed's 1973 opus 'Metal Machine Music' was deleted just three weeks after it's release, yet it has been cited by noise-fans as a turning point in sonic art and the birth of avant-garde "noise" music.
In 2002, German string ensemble Zeitkratzer achieved what Lou Reed himself considered "impossible" and transcribed and performed the album. The performance, which included all three parts of the original album climaxed with Reed himself performing guitar on the third part.
The show took place at the Berlin Opera House on March 17, 2002 and five years later it is finally going to be released.
You can expect it on September 2 in Australia, September 3 in the UK and Europe and September 4 in North America.
"Metal Machine Music was made 32 years ago. It was taken off the market three weeks after it was released. Still, time goes by and people get more used to what you call loops and electronics and noise and feedback." Reed said in a press release.
"Zeitkratzer gets in touch with me, 'Can we play Metal Machine Music live?' I said, 'It can't be done.' They said, 'We transcribed it. Let us send you a few minutes of it and you tell us.' They sent it, I listened to it, and the results were unbelievable. I said, 'My God! Okay, go do it.' They said, 'Will you play guitar on the third part of it?' So Metal Machine Music finally got performed live at the Berlin Opera House. It's extraordinary, because all those years ago it was considered a career ender."
