Foo Fighters ringleader Dave Grohl has spoken to MTV about his emo roots.
Although there is a song titled 'Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)' on the Foo Fighters' forthcoming album 'Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace', Grohl remains firm that the song is not a crack at your Chemical Fallout Panic-type bands. It's more of a jibe at the Foos themselves, wedged as it is in between angsty rock tunes, and titled "because it seemed like a little ray of hope in the middle of all this despair."Grohl grew up through Washington DC's first post-hardcore stirrings of emo in the late-'80s and claimed he has a funny relationship with the genre. He called the first time he saw Ian McKaye's post-Fugazi 'emo-core' outfit Rites Of Springs a "revelation."
Although, like the current acts topping the charts with melodrama and dynamics, when the genre first emerged Grohl remembers that all associated with it had a problem with the label. He says, "I'd never heard anything like it, and it was a really emotional experience. But in D.C., we all hated that 'emo-core' tag."
Despite the sensitive title for their new album, Grohl is adamant that there will still be 'kick-you-in-the-teeth' rock following their electric-acoustic double album 'In Your Honor'. He confirmed, "I still listen to Slayer once a week."
