Melbourne's legendary music venue The Palace is a smouldering burnt out shell this morning following a suspicious fire which started at around 3.30pm yesterday afternoon.
The recent closure of the 100 year old venue has been a political thorn in recent years following the local St Kilda council's conniving part in having the popular music venue shut down and torn down for the purpose of building apartments. The council, playing politics all the way through the process, even denied to Undercover that the closure would happen and insisted that the building would remain a music venue. But, like all political lies, the truth came out eventually.
Now, Melbourne has finally lost the heritage venue under suspicious circumstances.
Although plans were underway to demolish the venue, the St Kilda Council is believed to have hired security guards to watch the building to discourage vandalism.
Police are yet to state if the fire was deliberate or an accident.
The music institution was closed after a 5 year legal battle on June 12th 2007.
Over the years, The Palace, has played host to gigs by Nirvana, Public Enemy, Elvis Costello, Midnight Oil, De La Soul, Porno For Pyros, The Cult, Sex Pistols, Toto, Soundgarden, Savage Garden, Muse, Hunters & Collectos, Foo Fighters, Billy Bragg and The White Stripes.
