Here at Undercover we embraced the news that Avril Lavgine was finally being sued for 'Girlfriend'. Indeed, we had hoped that it would lead to some sort of UN resolution preventing such musical WMD from being inflicted upon an unwilling populace.
Sadly, it has come to our attention that Lavigne is instead being sued by a 70s pop band, who have bravely declared that actually wrote a song which bore similarities to her dire tune.The Rubinoos, who had a minor hit with their 1977 remake of their Tommy James & the Shondells tune 'I Think We're Alone Now', claim Lavigne's hit single rips off their song 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' from 1978.
'Girlfriend' was released in February, so it's evidently taken The Rubinoos some six months to drum up the courage to admit that they once wrote a rubbish pop song as well.
Any self-respecting musician would embrace Lavigne manager's comments that "There's nothing similar (between the two songs). Our musicologist says there (are) no similarities of melody, choral progression or meter."
But Rubinoos founder Tommy Dunbar sees dollar signs, and will pursue the suit which also names as a defendant Dr Luke, co-writer and producer of 'Girlfriend'.
