When Martha Davis returns to Australia for the Countdown Spectacular 2 in August, she will be returning to the place where it all started for her band The Motels.
"You were my first love," she tells Undercover News. "I still have the memory of going down to Australia, doing the gigs and the whole audience going off to 'Total Control'. It was very special."Martha is also looking forward to hooking back up with Countdown creator Ian 'Molly' Meldrum. She has fond memories of their first meeting. "In those days I was a scared kid in a foreign country," she explains. "They said he was wild, they said he was crazy. They just didn't say gay. I met him and threw my legs over him and he was horrified. He is truly one of my favorite people on the planet. He has a heart as big as the outdoors".
She also acknowledges that shows like Countdown are now extinct on the planet. She says the closest thing to a music show that everyone watches is Idol ...and that's a sad thing. "I wouldn't care if it provided us with new artists," she says. "It provides us with celebrities. It is just a stupid lust for celebrity. We used to have a lot of shows like Countdown. There was Dick Clark, Solid Gold and of course, Ed Sullivan with the Beatles. Paris Hilton in a few years is not going to be a pretty sight'.
Now in her mid-50s, Martha Davis has been a proud grandmother for 16 years. "My grandson William is 16," he proudly states. "We took him to Chicago to the Institute of Art and he hasn't stopped painting ever since. He has always been artistic. My grand daughter Katie is 13. He loves animals. She trains dogs and rides horses".
So what do they think of their rock and roll grandmother? "It is funny to them. I am a goofy grandma".
The Countdown Spectacular 2 starts August 18 in Newcastle.
