The freakier half of cult post-hardcore band At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, have spoken to MTV about their forthcoming 'Amputechture' album.
Afro-ed frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala explained to MTV that the album, no doubt another conceptual exploration into prog-rock, is comprised of converging stories and characters, much like the Magnolia film.He noted that the album is also informed by politics, much like At The Drive-In's work, and also by religion. Bixler-Zavala said that it explores "the fear of God instead of the love of God," and his "personal way of describing enlightenment". Sounds like the band are delving further into the spiritual noodling of the Santana school of songwriting that appeared on 2005's 'Frances The Mute'.
'Amputechture' will also feature Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, and the band will tour with the Peppers later on in 2006. A nine-minute opus from the album, called 'Viscera Eyes', was added to their myspace in two parts recently, but has been replaced by an edit. The album will be released on September 12.
