Rihanna has the number one spot in the U.K. this week on the strength of downloads alone for her single 'Umbrella'.
A physical version of the single will not be released until May 28.It is the first time an artist has hit the number one spot on downloads alone, although Gnarls Barkley's debut single 'Crazy' would have made it, if it weren't for the then-different chart rules.
This shows we are finally moving into the digital age, at least in parts of the world. Digital downloads count towards chart position in Australia, but nobody has hit the number one spot from downloads alone.
American digital downloads still do not count towards chart position.
