Folk funk pioneer Beck shakes off his recent maudlin tendencies for more oddball electro on his forthcoming album.
He worked with producer Nigel Godrich on his two most introspective albums 'Mutations' and 'Seachange', but Beck shook off the blues somewhat on last year's more Hispanic flavoured 'Guero'. Now the freaky troubadour reunites with Godrich for what he told MTV News is a unification of his hip-hop sounds and his more reflective work. For those wanting to hear a sample, Beck is currently streaming the brand new track 'Cell Phone's Dead' on his dot com. Once again, he puzzles listeners with a dizzying pastiche of proto funk and hip-hop with obtuse electro decorations.
Beck told MTV that while the forthcoming album is yet to be titled, the cover art concept already well-organised: each album will include a sheet of stickers so that fans can create their own customised cover.
He is also working on the 10th anniversary edition of his landmark 'Odelay' album, due out later this year. He promises an extra disc of b-sides and remixes from Aphex Twin, Mario C and The Dust Brothers, as well as 'Deadweight' from the 'Life Less Ordinary' soundtrack from 1997.
