Michael Jackson's mother is seeking a fortune from tour promoter she alleges are responsible for the King of Pop’s death.
As Michael rehearsed for his shows in London, AEG Live hired Dr Conrad Murray to look after the singer that ultimately led to his death and now Katherine Jackson, 82, accuses them of negligence.
He may refuse but there is a possibility that Murray could testify in the case of Michael’s wrongful death. The US doctor was jailed for involuntary manslaughter in 2011 after the singer overdosed on the drug propofol.
The case could last over two months with Katherine and two of the pop star’s children providing evidence in the trial - over four year after Michael’s death.
Due to a legal dispute over coverage on TV of the trial the jury selection at Los Angeles Superior Court was delayed on Tuesday. CNN and NBC have both stated that due to the Murray trial being aired live two years ago Judge Yvette Palazuelos should allow the same for this court case.
In June 25, 2009, the Thriller superstar died from an overdose of a powerful narcotic administered by Murray to help with chronic insomnia. Michael was rehearsing for a series of 50 shows in London, organised with Anschutz Entertainment Group, hoping to restore his waning career and improve his money problems. Jackson's mother disputes that they pressed her son whilst he prepared for the 'This Is It' tour.
Yet AEG says Jackson’s history of drug abuse was apparent before Murray was employed to supervise him ahead of and throughout the O2 Arena shows in the UK’s capital. And AEG argues that they aren’t accountable for appointing and monitoring Murray.
AEG lawyer Marvin Putman told CNN, "He was chosen by Michael Jackson, to be there at Michael Jackson's behest, to be Michael Jackson's doctor alone. Michael Jackson was the only person who could get rid of him."
Jackson's mother and his children - Prince, 16, Paris, 14 and 11-year-old Blanket - want AEG to pay over $US40b future earnings losses and other damages, reported by celebrity gossipmongers TMZ.
In other news the Jackson's are believed to be looking for a replacement for Michael now their Unity Tour has finished.
