Tasmanian DJ Akouo and MC Coin, from Perth, may be at the other ends of the country but they can still create hip-hop leaving you in a subdued, dreamlike state.
Blending neo-soul, backpack rap and eclectic rhythms the duo draw inspiration from a range of influences - J Dilla, Pete Rock, Hitek, Exile and 20Syl, Amp Fiddler, Erykah Badu and Common.
“It’s conscious, philosophical music to live your life by. It’s something to drive to, study to, play basketball to; it’s a simple soundtrack to a complex life," said MC Coin.
Acting as the proficient rhythmic engine room, DJ Akouo showcases his intuitive knowledge of rhythm and beat by displaying a flawless understanding of live instrumentation, cleverly constructed synth phrasing with a back catalogue of iconic samples. Leading the way vocally, Coin Banks compliments his partners articulate musicianship with a lyrical repertoire that extends the pair seamlessly.
Akouo said, “We’re both absolutely dedicated and passionate towards our art and we’d like to think that this record reflects that and subsequently delivers an interesting experience to the listeners.”
Their debut release shows the pair’s meticulous attitude to song writing and they’re definitely workaholics when in the studio - which can be heard in their music.
“20syl and Coin approached the song with the idea of Hip Hop/Music being their hearts. They both live and breathe the culture; and their heart beat and drum beat are in-sync,” Akouo said on their collaborations.
Sure to appeal because of Letters To The Sun’s intelligent song writing and awesome melodic production, they’re on their way to critical acclaim.
