Chris Russell, a self confessed 'grey man' hidden from plain sight in the Melbourne music scene for years has finally got his hometown taking notice of his unbelievable guitar playing, sexy as all get up vocals and a style for which he is lauded in the southern states of the U.S.A. Australians, listen up.
Along with the ever dapper Dean Muller (Hoss, Cosmic Psychos) on drums, Chris Russell's Chicken Walk released their first album in October this year. It was recorded beyond the back of somewhere in a nameless Town Hall that exists alongside two other buildings in a lost town. No effects, no bullshit, just sweet music played by a couple of masters and recorded on a Satdee night and Sundee arvo.
The album is immediately effecting as a result of the stripped back no-nonsense approach to playing and recording. You NEED this one in your car all summer long, it'll cure what ails yer no matter what the distance. Simultaneously reminiscent of long hot afternoons you can imagine but can't remember, Chris Russell's Chick Walk invokes a sense of what is the best of Australian talent right now, not just in Melbourne but anywhere.
Chris Russell himself describes the recording best on the accompanying insert to the album " My favourite pieces of recorded music were done this way. Snap shots. Not doctored or intellectualised , not rational, real living music."
Today marks the release of the first official video from the album - Skinny Girl. It was filmed in Melbourne at Cherry Bar, Newport substation and Caravan Music Club by Ago Soldati and Santana Rudge.
Check it out, but not before you check out the upcoming live performance dates for Chris Russell's Chicken Walk below. For all other Chicken Walkin' things including the album head here.
