Catherine Britt released her latest album of material " Always Never Enough" back in August and finally after commencing her recording career at the age of 14, folks in general, not just the critics are sitting up and taking notice.
Britt's music is usually and almost unfailingly described as alt-country. I loathe the term alt-country. It doesn't mean anything, or if it does, it doesn't articulate it's intented meaning very well. I always think of a clown with green hair singing Islands In The Stream accompanied by a sitar when I hear the term. To me it's ridiculous and thereby ridiculous to label anyone with talent and a country upbringing that writes " thinking persons" songs instead of typical country corn about " a table for one in the truck diner " or "boys in boots" as being alt-country. Catherine would probably disagree as she hosts the national radio program CMC's 'Alt Country'......
Catherine Britt is a songwriter and musician, lets leave it at that. Her Newcastle origins or the fact that she moved to Nashville for a period of 6 years should not be cause to lump her into the alt-country basket, whatever that may be.
No stanger to critical acclaim Britt is still the youngest Australian person ever to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and her swag of previous albums and singles have won countless awards and credit for her work.
Perhaps, The Music.com summed it up best with their review of the latest album " Always Never Enough".
" I'll be blunt; I had no real intention of of ever listening to "Always Never Enough", the new record from Catherine Britt. But she suckered me in witb the genius ploy of enlisting two of my favourite songwriters of all time, Guy Clark and Tim Rogers, so I had to at least give it a shot. I'm glad I did."
Catherine Britts latest single " Charlestown Rd " from the album has been serviced to radio this week, so keep your ears peeled. In the interim checkout the title track from the album perofrmed live at the ABC studios below.
