The Musicmetric Digital Music Index records the trends and preferences of millions of music fans across the world and then analyses the data to reveal some pretty scary stuff.
Namely that the most popular illegally downloaded album in the world was Rihanna’s "Talk that talk." Aaarrrrgh!!!! I'd rather stick pins in my eyes! Ok, so that is the really scary news, in other analysis there are some interesting stats.
Musicmetric analysed the data of 750,000 artists over a six month period ending in June 2012 and discovered that 405 million releases were downloaded in that time . No prizes for guessing which country topped the list with nearly 97 million downloads, if you guessed the U.S.A you would be correct. The UK took second place with just over 43 million downloads while Italy, Canada and Brazil rounded out the top five with 33.1 million, 23.9 million and 19.7 million downloads, respectively.
In Australian news The Hilltop Hoods were the only Oz group to appear in the list of Top Releases for Top 20 Downloading countries in the world, with their single " I Love It". Now that ain't scary. Check it.
