One of the most successful groups domestically in Australian history (although they never really cracked outside of the country) Cold Chisel finally have a tribute album.
The compilation CD pays tribute to the songs of Cold Chisel and if you get it quickly, you get a bonus disc with the originals alongside it.Scott Owen of The Living End told Undercover "[Rising Sun] seemed like a pretty obvious choice to us because it's got a bit of a rockabilly thing about it, which is where we came from really, playing that twelve bar blues rockabilly music, so it was a pretty obvious choice."
"You don't try and improve on it, you just do your own take on it you know? That was our approach, we knew that that kind of song would suit our band, a three piece kind of rockabilly thing. It's not about trying to improve on it because you just can't, those guys could play any kind of music, whether its rocky or poppy or whatever, reggae, whatever, they were able to do it so well, they were such world class musicians," he said.
"The thing that stands true to them which this album is a perfect example of is that they were such great songwriters." Owen continued, "There were so many really good class songwriters in the band. You can't really muck up a Cold Chisel song too bad because the songs stand up for themselves."
"They were a pretty special band, Cold Chisel."
Cold Chisel's unique sound was built up from touring the country over and over to some of the roughest crowds around. Their live show and their songs - even their ballads - are powered by balls of steel.
The Living End appear next to Pete Murray, Alex Lloyd, Paul Kelly, Grinspoon, Something For Kate, Augie March, Evermore, Thirsty Merc, The Waifs and more to pay tribute to one of Australia's great bands.
The solo careers of Don Walker, Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss were all launched from the band.
