The Clash's classic 1980 triple album 'Sandanista' will be given the tribute treatment with a new 2CD version cover version of the album being released in May.
The Sandanista Project will feature many acts including Features The Smithereens, Camper Van Beethoven, Jon Langford & Sally Timms, Amy Rigby, Katrina Leskanich (Waves), Wreckless Eric, Willie Nile, Matthew Ryan, Stew, Sex Clark Five and Sid Griffin & Coal Porters with proceeds going to two Clash backed charities Amnesty International (heartily supported by The Clash) and the Joe Strummer Memorial Forest, which is a division of Future Forests, an organization fighting global warming.Producer Jimmy Guterman said he wanted an immediate "in" on the project. "That's the craziest idea I've ever heard," he said when he heard about the project.
Katrina Leskanich from Katrina & The Waves leapt at the chance to participate as her song 'Walking On Sunshine' featured the same bass-line as The Clash's 'Hitsville, UK'.
Guterman says "Joe Strummer once said that Sandinista! is 'a magnificent thing. I wouldn't change it if I could.' And now, join us on The Sandinista! Project, in which we change everything on that magnificent record."
