Yesterday saw the launch of Vevo in Australia. It's been a long time coming.
Well, Australia is at least fourth cab off the rank. We only had to wait for it to be released in the U.S, U.K and Canada before we got a taste.
Vevo is a three way venture between music labels Sony and Universal and Abu Dhabi Media. The other two big players EMI and Warner are not part of the Vevo gang, although, EMI does licence content to the service. If you are interested you can expect around 45,000 videos from around 11,000 artists and apparently both commerical and independent are represented by 85% of labels. That's a big call considering how many music labels their are in the world.
Interestingly, Vevo does not pay artists directly but the labels who have the artists on their books, cutting out a huge administrative nightmare for themselves and pretty much washing their hands of any responsibility for making sure artists get the their due . Considering it is owned by two of the big four labels claims by Matt Pincus an independent music publisher that Vevo have never paid independent publishers and songwriters begs the question, what's in it for any artist not signed to Sony and Universal?
