Melissa Etheridge has won the Oscar for best original song at the 79th annual Academy Awards.
Etheridge penned the climate change warning anthem 'I Need To Wake Up' for Al Gore's documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth'. The groundbreaking film also took the prize for best documentary feature.Etheridge singled out the former US vice president for praise. "Mostly I have to thank Al Gore for inspiring us inspiring me and showing that caring about the Earth is not Republican or Democrat," she said in her acceptance speech. "It's not red or blue. We are all green. This is our job now, we can become the greatest generation, the generation that changed, the generation that woke up and did something and changed."
It was a triumphant moment for Etheridge, who remains in remission from breast cancer. She also thanked her "incredible wife, Tammy" and her four children, before joking that the Oscar statuette will be "the only naked man who will ever be in my bedroom."
