Up until now there has never been a book released about the Big Day Out. Acclaimed Australian rock photographer, Sophie Howarth has self published ‘Peace Love and Brown Rice: A Photographic History of the Big Day Out’.
This is the very first and only book to be released on the Big Day Out. Howarth's work is a vibrant and beautiful ride through Australia's favourite music festival from when it began in 1992. The book is packed with not only snaps but stories, anecdotes and collected memorabilia from all the BDO shows, presented in Sophie's distinctive scrapbook style; a gritty, sweaty, loved-up trip down memory lane of the biggest day out for Australian and international music fans.
“Anyone who has been granted the kind of access that photographer Sophie Howarth has had to the Big Day Out - Australia’s biggest touring rock festival since 1992- has got to have some good rock & roll stories. Naturally, Howarth doesn’t disapoint.” Rolling Stone
What with all the struggles the Big Day Out has faced in 2011/12 this book may rekindle some awesome memories of the Big Day Out's past and put into perpsective what a truly fabulous event it is. 'Peace Love & Brown Rice' showcases the colossal nature of the Big Day Out, the enormous names it attracts, as well as the backstage candid moments, the hard work that goes into making it happen and most importantly the fans, those millions of people who it is all pulled together for.
Sophie Howarth will be available on the Eve of the Sydney Big Day Out tomorrow afternoon ( 25th January) from 3pm to 6pm at Title 499 Crown Street Surry Hills to chat personally about photographing the Big Day Out. Take the opportunity to have a copy of Sophie's self published book on the history of the event through her photos personally inscribed.
Don't take my word for how tops it is. Here are a few snippets of responses to the book;
“This is the best book in the world!” Phil Jameson, Grinspoon
“Sophie-Sophie-Sophie….you really get to the heartbeat of the Big Day Out and capture what really happens…like when I snorted whiskey and it came out my eyes. ” Darren Cross, Gerling
“The Big Day Out will forever be tinted with nostalgia as the last summer I had as a teenager, and by far the best! – much love to all the friends I made there!” Charlotte Hatherley, ASH
Peace, Love and Brown Rice is out now through Sophie Howarth/Fuse.
