Just when it looked like things couldn't get any worse for embattled digital music provider Grooveshark, EMI join the other three major labels in their quest for royalty retrieval.
EMI Publishing has filed a lawsuit against Groovesharks parent company, the ironically named Escape Media Group. The suit is worth around $150,000 in unpaid royalties. In the scheme of things not very much...
Grooveshark believe that under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act the service they provide is legal providing they adhere to take down notices form copyright holders. EMI join Warners, Universal and Sony against Grooveshark over copyright and licensing issues.
Optimisitc Grooveshark have issued a statement declaring that they expect to resolve contract issues. One cannot help wondering if they will survive the combined force of the big four music heavyweights. It will be interesting to see what precedents will be set if any in this seemingly unending war between record lables and digital music services.
