Rod Stewart will be back in Australia in 2012 for an all-hit show and even that means he won’t do them all.
Stewart has had 62 hit singles, 31 of which went Top 10.
Rod had quite a career before ever having his first hit. In 1962, he joined The Ray Davies Quartet as their lead singer. When he left, they changed their name to The Kinks and Ray took over as singer.
In 1964, Rod sang for Long John Baldry where he made his recording debut on the b-side ‘Up Above My Head’. He was uncredited.
Later that year he scored his first solo recording contract with Decca Records and released ‘Good Morning Little Schoolgirl’. The single featured John Paul Jones, not yet of Led Zeppelin, on bass.
Stewart became the singer for The Jeff Beck Group in 1967. Ronnie Wood was also in the band at the time. The two would later form The Faces out of the ashes of The Small Faces.
Rod then juggled a solo career with his job as lead singer for The Faces. In 1969, he released his first solo album ‘An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down’.
Rod’s big break came in 1971 with the release of the now classic ‘Every Picture Tells A Story’. For Stewart purists, it was his finest moment. The album featured his greatest hit ‘Maggie Mae’ as well as the captivating ‘Mandolin Wind’ and an incredible rock version of the R&B classic ‘(I Know) I’m Losing You’.
Meanwhile The Faces also finally scored a global success that same year with the album ‘A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse’ and the hit song ‘Stay With Me’.
Rod hasn’t made a rock album of original songs since 2001’s ‘Human’, instead concentrating his recording efforts on his ‘American Songbook’ series.
