Michael Eavis Ponders The Future of Glastonbury

Michael Eavis, owner of The Worthy Farm on which the Glastonbury Festival is held, says the festival might be winding up in the next few years.

Eavis claims festivals are a dying breed. “Partly it’s economics,” he told The Times. “But there is a feeling that people have seen it all before.”

“We’ve probably got another three or four years. Womad and Latitude are not selling out,” he said before adding that the only reason Glastonbury sells out is because they get huge headliners, that in the case of Jay-Z, almost sent them bankrupt.

In 2012, the festival included juggernaut headliners U2, Coldplay and Beyonce on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights respectively.

The first Glastonbury Festival took place on 19th of September, 1970 and was headlined by The Kinks. 1,500 tickets were sold for a whopping £1 each. In 2011, 135,000 tickets were sold at £195 each.

We’ll have to wait and see what the Eavis family has planned. We might have to wait until 2013 to find out.
