The Police are back. With the exception of the 2003 Hall of Fame Induction, Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland have reunited with their first chore of duty ... opening the 2007 Grammy Awards.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are the Police and we're back," Sting announced to an audience of his peers. The Police performed their 1978 classic 'Roxanne' for the crowd. The song was about a prostitute.
The band formed in London in 1977 off the back of the punk movement. American Copeland was the son of a CIA agent who was commissioned in England. He met school teacher Gordon Sumner (Sting) and guitarist Henri Padovani to form The Police. Padovani left after the first single 'Fall Out' and was replaced with Animals guitarist Andy Summers.
That line-up recorded its first single 'Roxanne' but the single was initially a flop when first released. Their debut album 'Outlandos d'Amour', however, connected with the audience and 'Roxanne' breathed a new life when it was reissued a year later.
The Police became the biggest UK act of their time. All six albums went to number one but the band was torn by egos. After their 1983 album 'Synchronicity', they broke up, bailing out at the top of their field.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of 'Outlandos d'Amour'. The Police will this week announce a 60 date US tour.
