The musical The Book Of Mormon, creator by the duo behind South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone, scores nine Tony Awards.
The annual Tony Awards took place at New York’s Beacon Theatre with host Neil Patrick Harris kicking off proceedings with a snappy tune called ‘(Broadway Is) Not Just For Gays Anymore’.
In it’s 65th year, The Book Of Mormon unsurprisingly swept the awards, nabbing Tonys for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
Spotted in the crowd, just during the opening number, were Bono and The Edge from U2, Stephen Colbert, Angela Lansbury, James Earl Jones, Brooke Shields, Vanessa Redgrave, Christie Brinkley, Al Pacino, Kelsey Grammar, and David Hyde Pierce.
Harris hosted the night, taking multiple potshots at the embattled Spiderman musical, and also performed a duet with Hugh Jackman.
Other winners included Frances McDormand for Best Performance by an Actress in Leading Role in a Play for Good People, Ellen Barkin for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for The Normal Heart and John Larroquette for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
