Brisbane duo The Grates debut a mature look in the clip for their new single ‘Turn Me On’ from their forthcoming third album.
The formerly goofy bubbly trio was this January whittled down to a duo as drummer Alana Skyring departed for a career in the “culinary arts”.
Singer Patience Hodgson and guitarist John Patterson relocated to Brooklyn since 2008’s Teeth Lost, Hearts Won and they’ve returned with a sophisticated new vibe.
Their third album is called Secret Rituals and, as a sleek two-piece, Hodgson has said that it promises to be more direct than their previous work.
“Everything had been hidden in metaphors on the previous two albums,” she says. “I don’t exactly know how I started feeling confident but it was probably to do with being in New York and being out of my comfort zone and how scary that is in the beginning, but then when you conquer it you’re left with so many more resources because you’ve got so much more to draw from.”
They’ve also finally added bass to their repertoire, and recruited Brooklyn-based drummer Ben Marshall to finish off the songs.
Secret Rituals is due out on June 17 and the band are primed for an Australian homecoming tour and a spot on Splendour In The Grass.
The Grates have just released their first single ‘Turn Me On’ with an arch and arty black and white clip by Demitri Basil, who has also worked on clips for The Holidays and Cabins.
