The November reformation of Zoot for the first time in 40 years is to test the waters, literally.
Rick Springfield, Beeb Birtles, Darryl Cotton and Rick Brewer will reform Zoot initially for the Rick Springfield and Friends Cruise leaving Miami in November.
“We’re going to test the waters, so to speak, and see how it goes,” Beeb tells Undercover.fm. “If all goes well we’ll consider playing some shows around Australia. I guess it will all come down to our individual schedules at the time but I hope it can happen.”
The talks for the reformation started when Rick and Beeb were performing on the Countdown 2 Spectacular. Beeb, a founding member of Little River Band, was performing with his Little River Band co-founders Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble. Rick headlined the show. “We all still keep in touch with each other,” Beeb says. “I first heard about it from Darryl Cotton who told me that he and Rick Springfield had been talking about the possibility.”
However, it will be slightly different for Beeb. He was the bass player in Zoot but hasn’t played bass since they split. “Because I haven’t played bass since Zoot split up I’ll be playing electric guitar with Rick and the bass player in his band will substitute for me. I think Zoot’s music with two electric guitars will sound even ballsier”.
The members of Zoot formed as Down The Line in Adelaide in 1965. In 1967 they relocated to Melbourne and changed their name to Zoot. Their biggest hit was their hard rock cover of The Beatles ‘Eleanor Rigby’ in 1970 but in 1971 it was all over.
Rick went solo and onto international success with songs like ‘Speak To The Sky’ and ‘Jessies Girl’. Beeb formed Mississippi with Graeham Goble and had an Australian hit with ‘Kings of the World’. They both then formed Little River Band and also went onto global success. Darryl Cotton went solo and had a hit with ‘Same Old Girl’. Rick Brewer joined The Ferrets and had a hit with ‘Don’t Fall In Love’.
