Blue King Brown and Gurrumul shoot a stunning clip for a new version of his track ‘Gathu Mawula’.
The new take, called ‘Gathu Mawula [revisited]’ sees Blue King Brown’s Natalie Pa’apa’a bring her rapping and vocals to the song from breakout Aboriginal artist Gurrumul’s debut album.
The rhythms of Blue King Brown also add a new vitality to this heartfelt song about family and the connection between people and the land.
Gurrumul has been constantly approached for collaborations since the double-platinum success of his eponymous debut of 2008 but has turned them all down.
When Blue King Brown began performing a cover ‘Gathu Mawula’ live, he was impressed and joined them in many performances. Two years later, the collaboration was realised.
Carlo Santone of Blue King Brown says, “The beauty about this project is that both artists had a mutual respect for each others craft and wanted to do something together purely for the love of it, there was no strings, agendas or expectations. There was no rush, it took us two years to complete and the end result is not a typical sound you'd hear from either of us. It has been a very enjoyable and special collaboration.”
Natalie Pa‘apa’a adds, "We have very fond memories of performing Gathu Mawula live with Gurrumul on a number of different occasions, so it was natural to get into the studio together and record our version of his beautiful song. His voice is intoxicating, I think both of our audiences, and hopefully many more new listeners, will connect with this version."
The single is available now digitally in Australia and will be downloadable in the US and Europe on April 11.
There’s also a new video clip, featuring indigenous dancers, Gurrumul and Natalie. Have a look at it below.
