Hot Hot Heat Let Rick Rubin Go

Mega producer Rick Rubin began work with Canadian indie rock band, but it didn’t work out, the band told Undercover.

“We started a record with Rick Rubin and we let him go because it didn’t really work,” singer Steve Bays told Undercover.

“I don’t want to say we fired him, I mean I’m sure he could have fired us too, but when we started he would listen to the songs and he would go like this,” he said as he tapped each finger on the closest thumb.

“I like the idea of doing the album ourselves just ‘cause it’s more fun and you can get a bit weirder,” he said of their decision to self produce their latest album ‘Future Breeds’. “I think as Canadians we’re just very sensitive accommodating people sometimes. We’re still assholes when we need to be assholes, but for the most part, when a producer says “Maybe you should try this,” you just give him the benefit of the doubt, or you give her the benefit of the doubt, whereas it was nice to have that extra level of not having to worry about somebody’s feelings.”

The band have begun work on their as-yet-untitled sixth album, but they’re not quite ready to commit to it yet.

“We have twelve songs but we’re still trying to figure out the sound and the direction,” Bays said. “So it’s kind of up in the air. I really like everything we’ve been doing so far, it’s just more a matter of what you want to commit to and put your stamp on it as approved.”
