Biffy Clyro were catapulted into mainstream following the success of Matt Cardle winning X Factor and deciding to sing their ‘Many Of Horror’ (changed to ‘When We Collide’) on the show.
The Cardle version debuted at number one this week in the UK while the Biffy Clyro original came back into the chart at number 8.
While all this was happening, Biffy Clyro weren’t even in the UK. In fact they were hanging out at Undercover’s studio in Melbourne, Australia when it all went down.
Although it was Simon Cowell who chose the song for Cardle to sing, the guys from Biffy Clyro weren’t surprised Cowell knew their music. “Britain’s a small place. I guess everybody knows everybody,” James Johnston explained to Andrew Tijs at undercover.fm. “Certainly in the music industry I’m sure he has heard of us before. He said it was a great song and thought he would use it”.
James prefers the band’s version to the Reality Show winner’s song. “Its not as good as ours. It is an X-Factor version of the song,” he says. “Let’s just put it that way. The whole thing is quite surreal and a bit funny”.
For Biffy Clyro, the song is different to their original sound. “I think as we have gotten older we have become more open to different types of music. Sometimes you get an idea that is simple and good and it sticks,” James said.
